Yesterday and today….my how the years pass for our old alma mater.
In about seven more years, the school building will be 100 years old!
Here’s a little history about the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
Catholic Church History
“The first Catholic Church was stablished in St. Thomas in 1775 when the Danish government issued a decree.
This was done because escaped slaves from St. Thomas went to Puerto Rico (under Spanish rule then), and were baptized by the Roman Catholic Church.
They then refused the requests of the Danish government to return them on the grounds that St. Thomas offered them no Church for their newly adopted faith.
In 1767, an agreement was made between Denmark and Spain, that escaped slaves were to be turned over to the Danish authorities as soon as a Roman Catholic Church could be established on the island.”
