The New St. Thomas Cricket Team Wins the Match! ~ 1895

Cricket

Cricket was one of the most popular sports played in the Danish West Indies!

The newspapers were filled with hundreds of matches between visiting teams from neighboring islands, like Tortola as well as foreign teams from far away nations.

It seemed as though every Navy ship had a team of its own.

This rare image of The St. Thomas New CC Club was found in the archives of the Royal Danish Library in Denmark.

Here’s the newspaper report about this particular event.

Whit Monday
1895

“Whit Monday was, as usual, observed as a holiday, and numbers of people betook themselves to the country to spend it there.

In the afternoon, the children and adults of the Moravian Sunday school marched with banners and flags to spend the day at Nisky, which they did, returning in the afternoon.

The Cricket Match

A feature of the day’s sport was a match between the Eureka Cricket Club and the St. Thomas CC team.

Play commenced about eleven o’clock, and in the first innings, each side made 71 and of course, tied, but the second inning decided the game.

The St. Thomas team won with their final score of 88 and the Eureka, 73.”

The desire for great sportsmanship was a quality everyone shared, even if they couldn’t speak each other’s language.

Below are the names of the players. Recognize any ancestors?
