Do You Recognize This Pretty Lady From St. Croix? ~ 1939

Pretty lady St Croix,

Helen C. Taylor

Not much is known about Helen C. Taylor, the artist that created this beautiful pastel painting of a young girl in St. Croix.

However, inΒ 1935, I learned that Miss Taylor was on the committee with Miss Enid Baa to be a judge for the Peabody Prize Essay Contest, which was sponsored by the Commissioner of Education.

A young eleventh grader, by the name of Miss Ada E. Bough, won for her essay on “Munitions Makers and their Relations to War and Peace”.

note Helen C Taylor

The following year, Miss Taylor was one of the female judges that participated in the Anglican Church Flower Show. 🌸

“Delicious tea and rich ice cream were served.

All varieties of garden plants and flowers were placed everywhere.

It was a floral exhibit rarely seen in those days.”

This painting seems to represent a youthful, happy time in this girl’s life.

I hope by sharing this image, a member of her family will be able to identify her and be reunited with this treasured timepiece.

Update: Thanks to everyone who helped!

We learned that Miss Β Taylor was the daughter of Harry E. Taylor, who was the Administrator for St. Croix in 1931.
