Calypso Music
Calypso music and the production of island records became quite popular in the islands during the heyday of the 1950s.
The style of music originated in Trinidad and Tobago with African and European roots.
This highly rhythmic and harmonic sound drew upon these influences and became the voice of the people.
It is thought that the name “calypso” might be a corruption of the French carrouseaux, however the first mention of the word calypso was given in a description of a dance in 1882.
This Calypso compilation album on the RC Spenceley label includes artists such as the Duke of Iron, Lord Kitchener and others. Β
Songs included are:
- Woman like Saxophone

- One Gone
- Big Bamboo
- I left her behind for you
