Scenic Views of St. ThomasΒ π
Saint Thomas
At mention of thy famous name,Β
O Island of the Sea!
I feel again I have a claim
Within thy boundary.
I live again the vivid scene
Of childhood’s fitful hour,
An thou’rt always so serene,
My fabled Iv’ry tower!
What heart-pangs I have known beneath
The blossoms in thy bower.
And yet there comes that sweet relief-
The grapes were never sour.
The mariners of old have sung
Thy praises to the Sun.
Many a toast thy shores have wrung
From many a foreign gun.
Envious eyes have turned to scan
Thine envied plot o’ lands,
But alien is the will to plan
High treason on thy sands.
For Destiny has made thee mine,
Child to the greater land.
Hope of the Western Sphere combine,
Clasp of the jewelled band!
