Schooner, Gitana
Have a glimpse at one of the prettiest yachts to visit the Danish West Indies.ย ๐
Gitana was a wooden-keeled schooner, designed and built by D. J. Lawlor of Boston in 1882.
Her owner, William F. Weld was a Harvard Graduate and Commodore of the Eastern Yacht Club inย Massassachussets.
Cruising Through theย Westย Indies

Gitana sailed amongst all the islands arriving from St. Kitts to set anchor in the beautiful harbor of Charlotte Amalie.
Her Commander, Captain Williams knew the waters well.
Tagging along for fun, was the yacht, Carlotta which left the United States at the same time to cruise through the Caribbean with her.
Below are a few images from theย Nathaniel L. Stebbins Photographic Collection of her stateroom and deck.

Wow, that’s almost like a mansion on the sea. I have a book called, “Roaming through the West Indies” by Harry A. Franck. It was written in 1920. I’m pretty sure it mentions The Carlotta somewhere. It’s a 486 page book…old and yellowed, but in readable condition. I take it out and read excerpts once in awhile.
That’s cool Marian! I’ve heard of that book! Will have a look. ๐. Thanks
