Vintage Photograph Album
A rare album containing more than 190 vintage photographs from theย Danish West Indies and US Virgin Islands is up for auction!
They include photographs from the 1900s to the 1920s.
This vintage photograph album portrays rare images from St. Croix and St. Thomas on Transfer Day 1917.
Also included are images from the mourning ceremony of the death of King Frederik VIII in 1912, a local masquerade, and a Maypole dance as well as street views from several towns on the islands.
Panoramic Views
There are also panoramic views of the island’s countryside from Mt. Pleasant, Mt. Eagle, Mt. Victory and from several estates.
If you’re familiar with St. Croix, you’ll recognize Northside, Fredensborg, La Grange, Kingshill, Jolly Hill, Betty’s Hope and the ruins of Bรผlowsminde.
The collection is vast with photographs of local workers from the Bethlehem Sugar Factory, the St. Croix public library, and the worker’s barracks.
They are all vintage gelatin silver prints, professionally glued in a contemporary album and accompanied by handwritten captions in white.
Provenance: Descendants of an officer in the Danish artillery serving in the Danish West Indies during this time period are in possession of the album.
Estimate is 60,000 kroner or $7,730.00 US dollars.
